Reconnecting with Roots, Purpose & Self

2/6/2026

Dr Manoranjan Mishra
Sabbatical Dates: 1st October 2025 - 31st March 2026

The six-month sabbatical I undertook was not merely a break from professional responsibilities, but a deeply intentional journey of reconnection, reflection, and renewal. After years of committed engagement in development work through Jeevanrekha Parishad (JRP), this period offered me the opportunity to pause, revisit my roots, reconnect with family and community, and explore spiritual pathways that often remain neglected in a busy professional life.

The sabbatical became a multidimensional experience—blending personal memories, family bonding, cultural grounding, spiritual exploration, and intellectual introspection.

Reconnecting with Roots: Village Visits and Community Bonds

A significant part of my sabbatical was spent in my native village, Bental, where I revisited the landscape of my childhood. Walking through familiar paths, meeting elderly villagers, and reconnecting with people who were part of my early life evoked a deep sense of belonging and humility.

These interactions were not merely nostalgic—they served as a reminder of:
  • The simplicity and resilience of rural life
  • The value of human relationships beyond transactional engagement
  • The importance of community wisdom and lived experiences

Listening to villagers’ stories, observing ongoing challenges, and reflecting on past transformations helped me reconnect with the foundational purpose of my development work. It reinforced my belief that sustainable change must remain rooted in local realities and human dignity.

Family Immersion: Strengthening Personal Foundations
I also spent meaningful time with my family, both in my village and in Delhi, where I stayed with my wife, son, daughter, and daughter-in-law. I also spent some time with my son-in-law. This phase of the sabbatical was marked by active participation in daily household life—cooking, assisting in routine tasks, and simply being present.

This experience brought:
  • A renewed appreciation for family as a support system
  • A deeper understanding of intergenerational perspectives
  • Emotional grounding and balance
Living closely with my family allowed me to slow down and experience life beyond my professional identity. It strengthened my empathy, patience, and ability to listen—qualities essential for both personal well-being and leadership.

Spiritual Exploration: Pilgrimage and Inner Journey
A major dimension of my sabbatical was spiritual exploration through visits to sacred and reflective spaces across India, including:
  • Shirdi Sai Baba Temple
  • Haridwar
  • Rishikesh
  • Guwahati
  • Mahakaleshwar Temple
  • Omkareshwar Temple
  • Chilika Lake
These journeys were complemented by time spent in yoga and meditation centres, where I engaged in practices of mindfulness, silence, and introspection.

Through these experiences, I encountered:
  • The power of stillness and self-awareness
  • The importance of aligning action with inner values
  • A deeper sense of spiritual connectedness beyond rituals
My visit to Chilika Lake, particularly its serene island environment, offered a rare moment of solitude and ecological reflection—reinforcing for me the interconnectedness of nature, livelihood, and human responsibility.

Creative Reflection: Writing My Life Story
During the sabbatical, I also undertook the significant task of writing a story based on my life journey. This process of documenting experiences, struggles, and achievements became a powerful tool for self-reflection.

Writing enabled me to:
  • Revisit key turning points in my life
  • Understand patterns of resilience and growth
  • Acknowledge both successes and limitations
This creative exercise was not just about storytelling—it became a process of self-actualization, helping me integrate past experiences with my present identity and future aspirations.

Self-Resilience and Self-Actualization
The six-month journey cultivated in me a profound sense of self-resilience and self-actualization. By stepping away from routine pressures, I was able to:
  • Rebuild mental and emotional strength
  • Develop clarity about my personal and professional purpose
  • Strengthen inner discipline through spiritual practices
I experienced that resilience is not only about enduring challenges but also about consciously renewing oneself. The sabbatical allowed me to reconnect with my intrinsic motivations and reaffirm my commitment to social transformation.

Emerging Vision and Values
The sabbatical shaped a refined vision and strengthened the core values that will guide my future leadership:

Key Values Reinforced
  • Simplicity and humility
  • Compassion and empathy
  • Community-centered development
  • Spiritual grounding in decision-making
  • Balance between personal life and professional commitment

Evolved Vision
I envision a more holistic approach to development—where economic progress is integrated with social harmony, environmental sustainability, and inner well-being.

Implications for Leadership at JRP
The insights I gained during the sabbatical are expected to significantly influence my leadership at Jeevanrekha Parishad (JRP):
  1. Human-Centered Approach - Greater emphasis on listening to communities and valuing their lived experiences.
  2. Integrated Development Model - Incorporating elements of mental well-being, spirituality, and ecological balance into development programs.
  3. Strengthened Team Culture - Promoting empathy, collaboration, and work-life balance within the organization.
  4. Strategic Clarity - A renewed focus on long-term impact rather than short-term outputs.
  5. Personal Leadership Style - Leading with calmness, patience, and reflective decision-making rather than urgency and pressure.

Conclusion: A Transformative Journey
The sabbatical was not a pause but a transformation. It bridged my past with the present, the personal with the professional, and the external journey with inner discovery. By reconnecting with my roots, deepening family ties, exploring spiritual dimensions, and reflecting creatively, I have returned with renewed energy, clarity, and purpose.

This journey has prepared me not only to lead JRP more effectively but also to inspire others through a balanced, grounded, and value-driven approach to life and development.
