Introduction

After more than two decades of continuously serving marginalized communities through Vizhuthukal Trust, this sabbatical became one of the most meaningful periods of my life. It was not merely a break from work; it was a journey of personal renewal, family bonding, cultural learning, leadership transition, and self-discovery.

For many years, my life revolved almost entirely around community development activities, donor commitments, and project implementation. The Cocoon Sabbatical gave me the rare opportunity to pause, reflect, reconnect with my family, and rediscover myself beyond my professional identity. It allowed me to travel across different regions of India, appreciate the country's extraordinary cultural diversity, and return with renewed energy, better physical health, and a refreshed vision for leading Vizhuthukal Trust.

February 2026 – A Journey to the Andaman Nicobar Islands: Experiencing Freedom, Nature and Family

Our sabbatical began with an unforgettable family visit to the Andaman Islands. This journey carried special meaning because it marked two significant milestones in our lives—our very first flight experience and our first-ever ferry journey. The excitement we felt as a family was beyond words. Every moment, from boarding the aircraft to sailing across the sea between islands, became a cherished memory that we will treasure forever.

The natural beauty of the Andaman Islands was breathtaking. The crystal-clear blue waters, peaceful beaches, lush greenery, and the calm rhythm of island life offered a refreshing contrast to our busy lives. We experienced the warmth and kindness of the local people, whose hospitality made us feel welcomed wherever we travelled. Living close to the sea and witnessing the island culture broadened our understanding of the different ways people live within our own country.

The most emotional and unforgettable experience of the trip was our visit to the historic Cellular prison. Walking through the prison where countless Indian freedom fighters endured unimaginable suffering filled our hearts with deep respect and gratitude. The Light and Sound Show vividly brought alive the sacrifices made by those who fought for India's freedom. Listening to their stories created an overwhelming sense of patriotism and reminded us that the dignity and freedom we enjoy today were earned through extraordinary courage and sacrifice. That evening became one of the most powerful moments of our entire sabbatical, inspiring us to continue serving society with renewed purpose.

One of the highlights of our journey was visiting Radha nagar beach, widely regarded as one of Asia's most beautiful beaches. Walking barefoot on its soft white sand, surrounded by turquoise waters and pristine natural beauty, was an unforgettable experience. As the evening approached, we witnessed a spectacular sunset over the horizon. Watching the golden rays of the sun slowly disappear into the sea while standing together as a family created one of the most peaceful and memorable moments of our entire sabbatical. The serenity of the beach allowed us to disconnect from everyday responsibilities and simply appreciate the beauty of nature.

Another exciting experience was our visit to Elephanta Island, where we stepped out of our comfort zones and enjoyed several adventure activities. We participated in a Sea Walk, which gave us the rare opportunity to walk on the ocean floor and witness colourful coral reefs and marine life up close. We also experienced a mini submarine ride, allowing us to observe the underwater world without diving, along with several other enjoyable water rides. These adventures filled us with excitement, strengthened our confidence, and created unforgettable family memories that we will cherish for years to come.

March 2026 – Discovering Kolkata: A City of Heritage, Faith and Engineering Excellence
In March, we travelled from Tirunelveli to Kolkata  on a one-and-a-half-day train journey. Travelling across several states allowed us to witness India's changing landscapes, languages, food habits, and lifestyles. The journey itself became an enriching experience, reminding us of the vastness and diversity of our nation.
Kolkata welcomed us with its vibrant energy, rich history, and warm-hearted people. One of the first places we visited was the magnificent Howrah Bridge. Standing before this engineering marvel filled us with admiration for India's technical brilliance and architectural capability. The bridge is not only an important landmark but also a symbol of the country's engineering achievements.

We visited several temples and religious sites belonging to different faiths. Observing people from diverse backgrounds worshipping in harmony helped us better understand India's unique cultural identity. Every place had its own traditions, rituals, architecture, and history, reinforcing the beautiful reality of India's unity in diversity.
Another unforgettable destination was the Victoria memorial hall.  Its magnificent Italian-inspired architecture and beautifully preserved museum collections left us completely mesmerized. Every gallery reflected different chapters of India's history through paintings, sculptures, and historical artefacts. We also visited Edan Garden, one of the most iconic cricket stadiums in the world. Visiting such a historic sporting venue reminded us of cricket's special place in India's national identity and cultural life.

April 2026 – Jaipur: Celebrating India's Royal Heritage
Our April journey took us to Jaipur, again travelling by train from Tirunelveli. Every kilometer of the journey introduced us to new cultures, languages, traditions, and landscapes.

Jaipur was a magnificent celebration of India's royal heritage. We explored several historic monuments, including Naharagarh fort, Jantar Mantar,  The City Palace, Ambar fort and Jaigarh Fort.

Each monument reflected remarkable craftsmanship, sophisticated engineering, and extraordinary artistic vision. Standing within these magnificent structures, we felt immense pride in India's architectural heritage. The panoramic views from the hilltop forts, the intricate carvings, grand courtyards, and beautifully preserved palaces left us inspired and deeply appreciative of our country's rich history.

We also visited several places of worship representing different religious traditions. Every temple reflected unique rituals, customs, festivals, and ways of life. These experiences taught us that although every state in India has its own identity and traditions, the values of hospitality, spirituality, and mutual respect unite people across the nation.

May 2026 – Reflection, Recovery and Personal Transformation
The month of May was dedicated to recovery, reflection, and preparing for a renewed return to professional life. After months of travel and learning, I intentionally spent time restoring both my physical and emotional well-being.

One of the most meaningful changes during this period was adopting a healthier lifestyle. I joined a gym and made fitness part of my daily routine. I have continued this practice consistently without missing workouts, which has significantly improved my health, discipline, energy levels, and overall quality of life. This positive habit has helped regulate my daily schedule and strengthened both my physical and mental well-being.

Equally valuable was the opportunity to reconnect with my relatives, friends, and well-wishers. I spent quality time sharing my Cocoon Sabbatical experiences with them, reliving beautiful memories, exchanging stories, and strengthening relationships that had often been neglected because of my work commitments. These joyful moments reminded me that personal relationships are essential for a balanced and fulfilling life.

Organizational Growth During My Sabbatical
One of the greatest outcomes of the Cocoon Sabbatical was witnessing the strength and resilience of Vizhuthukal Trust during my absence. The organization continued to function effectively under the capable leadership of Mrs. Vijayakumari, who successfully served as the acting leader throughout the four-month period.

During this time, the organization achieved several important milestones. A new livelihood initiative was launched in partnership with the Ashvini Seetha foundation creating additional opportunities for vulnerable communities. A new elderly care project supported by the Smile Foundation was initiated, and the first installment of funding was successfully received. In addition, Vizhuthukal Trust received the second and third installments from the Selavip foundation for the ongoing construction of 30 new houses for vulnerable families, ensuring uninterrupted implementation of this important housing program.

These achievements clearly demonstrated that the organization has developed strong systems, committed staff, and capable second-line leadership. The sabbatical reinforced my confidence that Vizhuthukal Trust is no longer dependent on a single individual but has evolved into an institution with sustainable leadership and governance.

Reflections and Gratitude
This four-month Cocoon Sabbatical has been a truly life-changing experience. It enabled me to witness the incredible cultural diversity of India while also understanding the deeper meaning of the phrase, "Unity in Diversity." Every state we visited had its own language, traditions, architecture, cuisine, history, and customs, yet everywhere we experienced kindness, hospitality, and a shared sense of national identity.

More importantly, this journey allowed me to understand myself better. It gave me precious time with my family, helped me reconnect with old friends, build new friendships, improve my health, and reflect on my life's purpose. It also strengthened my confidence that Vizhuthukal Trust possesses the leadership capacity to continue serving communities effectively, even in my absence.

I sincerely thank the Cocoon Initiative and Dasra for believing in the importance of rest, reflection, and leadership renewal. This opportunity has not only transformed me personally but has also strengthened the future of our organization. I return from this sabbatical healthier, happier, more resilient, and more committed than ever to serving marginalized communities with renewed passion, wisdom, and hope.
