My sabbatical was a deeply transformative journey that allowed me to step away from the relentless demands of my professional role and reconnect with myself on a personal, emotional, and spiritual level.

After formally relinquishing my responsibilities at the outset, I intentionally chose to slow down and create space for rest, deep reflection, and holistic renewal. This period offered a rare opportunity to pause, breathe, and rediscover aspects of myself that routine obligations had overshadowed.

A significant part of this period was dedicated to deep introspection and self-observation. I spent extended hours in solitude, consciously observing my thoughts, emotions, and internal patterns as they surfaced. This mindful process helped me better understand my inner dialogue, recognize long-standing mental habits, and gain clarity about my deeper aspirations and sense of purpose. It was a chance to listen more closely to what my heart was truly guiding me toward, beyond the noise of daily routines and professional expectations. Journaling these observations added further layers of insight, helping me track my personal evolution throughout the sabbatical.

I also established a consistent and nourishing practice of morning meditation and breathing exercises, which became a cornerstone of my daily routine. These mindful rituals not only improved my focus and mental clarity but also brought a profound sense of calmness, emotional stability, and inner balance. Over time, I noticed a positive shift in how I responded to situations—with greater patience, heightened awareness, and a deepened sense of mindfulness. On many mornings, I felt a renewed sense of gratitude for the simple act of being present, which set a positive tone for the entire day.

Another important aspect of my sabbatical was reconnecting with meaningful relationships. I spent quality, uninterrupted time with my closest friends and loved ones, engaging in heartfelt conversations, sharing experiences, and simply enjoying moments of togetherness. These interactions brought a sense of joy, lightness, and emotional rejuvenation, vividly reminding me of the importance of nurturing personal connections alongside professional commitments. It became clear to me that such bonds are a vital source of resilience and inspiration.

I also had the opportunity to travel with my family and visit several temples, which proved spiritually enriching and a bonding experience. Walking through these sacred spaces, participating in rituals, and absorbing the tranquil atmosphere allowed me to disconnect from daily pressures and immerse myself in a profound sense of devotion, gratitude, and inner peace. The time spent with family not only strengthened our relationships but also created cherished memories that I will carry forward.

In addition, I devoted time to reading several life-changing and thought-provoking books, spanning topics such as mindfulness, leadership, the subconscious mind, purpose, and personal development. Each book offered unique perspectives and practical wisdom, sparking deep reflection on my journey thus far and inspiring me to envision new possibilities for the future—both for myself and for the organization I serve. Many of these insights have been captured in my journal, serving as a wellspring of guidance and inspiration that I intend to revisit.

I had the opportunity to attend the Hearth Summit in Bengaluru on November 20th and 21st at The Bangalore Creative Circus, organized by The Well-Being Project, which was a deeply enriching and transformative experience during my sabbatical. The summit brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds to reflect on inner well-being, purpose, and conscious living. Through a series of insightful sessions, guided reflections, and interactive discussions, I gained a deeper understanding of emotional awareness, mindfulness, and the importance of leading with compassion. The experience helped me reconnect with my inner self and reinforced the value of aligning personal purpose with professional life. It also provided practical tools and perspectives that I can integrate into my leadership approach, particularly to foster empathy, clarity, and meaningful relationships in my work and community.

Overall, my sabbatical was not merely a period of rest, but a holistic process of renewal—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It enabled me to step back, thoughtfully reassess my priorities, and return with a clearer sense of direction, strengthened inner resilience, and a renewed commitment to lead with greater awareness, compassion, and purpose. I am profoundly grateful for this experience and look forward to applying these learnings to both my personal life and professional journey.

What questions /reflections emerged during your sabbatical – Could be related to personal or professional life.

My sabbatical gave me essential space to pause and reflect deeply, both personally and professionally. The resulting questions and insights now define my direction and focus.

Personally, I reflected: Am I living by my values and purpose, or driven by external expectations?
This led me to examine how I spend my time and energy, and whether my actions truly reflect what I value most. I began to understand the importance of balancing doing and being—between constant action and mindful presence.

I also asked: What truly brings me fulfillment and peace?
To explore this further, I turned to meditation, solitude, and spiritual experiences. Through these, I realized that inner peace does not come from achievements alone, but from clarity, acceptance, and connection—with oneself and with others. This reflection has encouraged me to adopt a more mindful and grounded approach to life.

I reflected: How do I respond to challenges, and what drives those responses?
Through this inquiry, I recognized areas for growth—particularly in cultivating patience, active listening, and emotional awareness.

Shifting my focus to the professional realm, several critical questions emerged:
  • Am I enabling others to grow, or am I carrying too much responsibility?
  • How can I build stronger systems and teams that aren't dependent on one person?
These realizations highlighted the value of distributed leadership and team empowerment, emphasizing that sustainable impact comes from building capable teams and systems.

Another key question was: “What is the long-term vision I hold for the organization, and how can it evolve to meet future challenges?”
As a result, I began to think more strategically about scaling impact, strengthening partnerships, and aligning our work more deeply with community needs and environmental sustainability.

I also reflected on the balance between professional commitment and personal well-being. How can I sustain my energy and effectiveness over time without burnout? Reflection is an essential component of effective leadership.

My sabbatical shifted me from constant doing to intentional living and conscious leadership. The questions it raised now guide my leadership and life direction.

What memory has stayed with you from your sabbatical?
One of the most meaningful memories from my sabbatical is sitting in quiet stillness during the early morning hours, practicing meditation and simply observing my thoughts without any urgency to act or respond.

I vividly remember those moments just after waking up—when the surroundings were calm, distractions were minimal, and I could sit in silence with a sense of presence and awareness. In those moments, I experienced a deep sense of peace that I had rarely allowed myself to feel during my otherwise busy professional life. It was not just about meditation as a practice, but about reconnecting with myself in an honest, grounding way.

Another powerful memory is visiting the temple with family. Standing in a spiritual space, away from daily pressures, fostered connection, gratitude, and calm. These experiences enriched me spiritually and emotionally, strengthening family bonds and reminding me of the importance of togetherness.

I also cherish joyful moments with close friends—unplanned conversations, laughter, and the comfort of presence. These experiences brought lightness and reminded me that happiness is often in small, meaningful interactions.

These memories last not just for their events, but for the feelings—peace, clarity, connection, contentment. They remind me of the life I want: balancing responsibility with mindfulness, achievement with well-being, and leadership with humanity.

What did you struggle with during your sabbatical?
While my sabbatical was mainly for rest, reflection, and renewal, it had challenges. Adjusting to a slower pace after years in a demanding leadership role left me restless at first.

I struggled to sit in silence and face my thoughts. More time alone surfaced unresolved worries and questions. Through meditation and awareness, I gradually accepted these thoughts calmly, bringing clarity.

Early in my sabbatical, I had some health issues, like a fever and digestive problems. I realized these stemmed from work-related stress and an irregular routine. With rest, a better routine, improved habits, and consistent meditation, I recovered well.
The lack of constant pressure aided my recovery. Unlike at work, where I pushed through discomfort, this break gave my body and mind space to heal.

Another challenge was feeling detached from work and organizational changes. At times, I wondered about progress, decisions, and my role. Gradually, I learned to trust my team and systems, letting me fully embrace the sabbatical's purpose.

These struggles, though sometimes uncomfortable, were vital to my sabbatical. They taught me the value of rest, self-care, emotional awareness, and letting go. Ultimately, they built resilience and preparedness for moving forward.

Any insights or learnings from your sabbatical that you plan to implement in your work / personal life?
My sabbatical has been a deeply enriching experience, offering several transformative lessons. These insights will shape my personal growth and professional practice moving forward, guiding me to lead a more intentional and balanced life.

One important learning is the value of reflection and inner alignment. I realized that clarity in leadership comes from regularly pausing and listening to one’s inner voice. To maintain alignment with my values and purpose, I will set aside time for periodic reflection.

Consistent self-care practices, like meditation and breathing exercises, have improved my mental clarity and well-being. I plan to maintain this daily routine, even during busy times, as an essential part of my lifestyle.

Another key insight is the importance of balancing the intensity of work with moments of rest and renewal. Earlier, I tended to remain continuously engaged in work without allowing sufficient recovery time. The sabbatical helped me understand that sustained effectiveness requires conscious pauses. I plan to incorporate healthier work rhythms, ensuring that I maintain both productivity and well-being over the long term.

From a leadership perspective, I now appreciate the importance of trusting and empowering teams. Stepping away showed that strong systems work well in my absence. I will focus on delegation, capacity building, and nurturing leadership within the organization.

I will practice more emotional awareness, active listening, patience, and thoughtful decision-making, especially under pressure.

I realized the need to invest in relationships—with family, friends, and myself. I will consciously devote time to nurturing these connections.

Finally, my sabbatical reinforced the importance of living with intention rather than operating on autopilot. I aim to raise my awareness of how I lead, interact with others, and make choices—ensuring that both my personal and professional journeys are purposeful and fulfilling.

Collectively, these learnings form the foundation of a new approach for me—one centered on intentional leadership, mindful well-being, and meaningful relationships. By consciously applying these insights, I will move forward as a more grounded, mindful, and effective leader committed to personal and professional fulfillment.

Do you feel a sense of rest and well-being post your sabbatical? If yes, in what way, and if not, what was missed?
Yes, I feel a genuine sense of rest and well-being after my sabbatical. Taking this time away let me recharge and gain a fresh outlook on my personal and professional life. I focused on self-care and activities that promote well-being, like regular exercise, mindfulness, and quality time with loved ones.

The sabbatical also gave me a valuable opportunity to pursue hobbies and interests I had put on hold, such as reading, traveling, and exploring new skills. These experiences not only helped reduce stress but also sparked new ideas and creativity, leaving me feeling rejuvenated and more motivated as I transitioned back to work.
If I missed anything, it was diving deeper into creative projects or more structured skill development. Still, the sabbatical provided what I needed—a meaningful break that improved my rest, well-being, and enthusiasm.

Overall, the sabbatical has helped me return with renewed energy, improved health, emotional stability, and a clearer perspective, enabling me to move forward more effectively in both my personal and professional life.

How did your colleagues and family feel about your sabbatical?
My sabbatical was positively received by both my colleagues and family, though their perspectives evolved.

From a family perspective, they were very supportive and happy with my decision. They saw this as an opportunity for me to rest, improve my health, and spend more quality time with them. The time we spent together—especially during travel and temple visits—strengthened our bond and brought a sense of joy and togetherness. They also noticed positive changes in my calmness, patience, and overall well-being.
From a professional perspective, my colleagues initially had some concerns about managing responsibilities in my absence. However, this phase gradually turned into a valuable learning experience for the team. They stepped up, took ownership, and handled responsibilities more independently. This strengthened their confidence and reinforced the importance of shared leadership and teamwork within the organization.

Over time, my colleagues appreciated the purpose of the sabbatical and supported my decision, recognizing that it would help me return with renewed energy and clarity. It also created an opportunity for the organization to test and strengthen its systems and team capacity.

Overall, both my family and colleagues viewed the sabbatical as a positive and meaningful step, contributing not only to my personal well-being but also to the organization's growth and resilience.

Any feedback/areas of improvement to The Cocoon Initiative about the process?
Overall, the sabbatical process was well-designed and thoughtfully supported. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity and the trust extended to me—it made a meaningful difference in my personal and professional journey.

One key strength of the process was its flexibility and openness, which allowed me to use the sabbatical period in a way that best met my needs. This was very valuable.

I suggest a few ways to strengthen the process further:
  • Pre-sabbatical orientation: A more structured briefing or reflection framework could help participants mentally prepare and set clearer intentions.
  • Periodic light-touch check-ins: Provide optional check-ins during the sabbatical (without pressure) to help participants stay connected and reflect more deeply on their journeys.
  • Post-sabbatical integration support: Create a structured space to help participants transition back to work, reflect on learnings, and plan how to apply insights.
  • Peer learning platform: Enable opportunities for participants to connect, share experiences, and learn from each other to enrich the overall impact.
  • Overall, my experience with The Cocoon Initiative has been highly positive and transformative. With a few structural and engagement enhancements, the process can become even more impactful for future participants.

What advice would you offer to anyone else planning to take a sabbatical?
My key advice to anyone planning a sabbatical is to approach it with openness and intention. Avoid rigid expectations. A sabbatical is not just a break from work. It is an opportunity for deeper reflection, healing, and renewal.

Disconnect from your routine duties. This detachment may feel uncomfortable, but it is essential to gain the real value of your sabbatical.

Secondly, do not over-plan the period. Having a broad intention is helpful. Yet leaving space for spontaneity allows you to discover what you genuinely need—rest, reflection, travel, or learning.

It is also important to embrace silence and self-reflection. Spend time alone, observe your thoughts, and listen to your inner voice. This can bring powerful insights, even if it feels challenging first.

At the same time, take care of your physical and mental health. Simple practices like meditation, breathing exercises, good food, and adequate rest can help. These can have a profound impact on your overall well-being.

Another important aspect is to trust your team and let go of control. A sabbatical is also an opportunity for your organization and colleagues to grow. Let them take ownership and function independently.

Finally, be patient with the process. Not every day will feel productive or meaningful. Over time, the experience will bring clarity, balance, and renewed energy. Treat your sabbatical as an inward and outward journey—it can reshape how you live, lead, and relate to the world.
